Valdivia
hosts a multitude of interesting tourist destinations, from parks
and piers to museums and shopping areas.
Universidad
Austral de Chile
The
Universidad Austral is an internationally renown educational center.
The University was founded the February 16, 1954, becoming a legal
entity on September 7th of the same year, making this the date that
officially commemorates the beginning of the University. The first
class numbered only 33 students. Today, the school serves around
10,500 students. The official opening ceremony of the Universidad
Austral took place on March 12, 1955, in the presence of the President
of the Republic of Chile, General Carlos Ibañez del Campo.
In August of 1955, 32 hectares were acquired on Isla Teja island,
where the University was established, linked to the city by the
newly-inaugurated Pedro de Valdivia bridge. The construction of
the buildings began in 1958, which, along with the inauguration
of the academic year, gave birth to the university city, based on
the plans of city architects Gabriela González and Ronald
Ramn.
The
historic district
Made
up of a collection of houses and building from the early twentieth
century, the beautiful architecture of the historic district takes
us back to the time of the city's splendor. It is mainly situated
between Yungay street and General Lakes, near downtown.
Costanera
Avenue
Conceived
like pedestrian and vehicular walkway, Costanera Avenue affords
one the opportunity to enjoy views from the Calle Calle and Pedro
de Valdivia bridges. The combination of calm water, beautiful gardens
and tourist and cargo boats, transform it into a gorgeous place
to know.
The
Spanish Towers
These
towers were constructed by the Spanish in 1774. Their function was
to defend the entrance and exit of the city. Today, they are places
of real historical interest, that revive the Chilean colonial period.
The first tower, known as "Torreon de Barro," is located
in the most important main road of Valdivia (Av. Picarte). The other,
" Torreon de los Canelos," is located in Yungay street,
on the corner corner of Yerbas Buenas.
Shuster
Wharf and River Ferry
To
know Valdivia is also to discover this area, which is characteristic
of the city. Here, an important number of docks, artisan fishing
sites, and sports and tourist recreation spots come together. It
is also an ideal place to purchase typical products of the region,
such as seafood, fruits and vegetables.
Plaza
de la República
This
plaza is the Center of civic activity in Valdivia. It is a beautiful
meeting and relaxation space for both villagers and tourists. From
this site, you can reach the Post office, the city Government and
the Cathedral of Valdivia.
Mauricio
van de Maele Historical and Archaeological Museum
This
museum is located on the banks of Valdivia river, in Isla Teja.
The museum contains an outstanding sample of Mapuche culture from
the colonial era, and the later German colonization. In addition
it displays ancient objects and maps of historical interest, that
guide the visitor through the different times that the city has
lived.
Saval
Park
A traditional
Chilean park. Its lagoon is one of the most beautiful visions in
Valdivia. Saval Park also holds the characteristic Valdivian forest,
where the ancient Coigües reach their full splendor. In addition
to being an ideal space for recreational and family activities,
horseback rides and festivals are held here.
Harnecker
Park
Located
in downtown, this park is built for the practice of sports, like
tennis, children's soccer and jogging. Surrounded by ancient trees,
the area also offers basic picnic amenities.
